IF NOT NOW WHEN copy.jpg

This was the final piece created for my MFA Thesis Project. The geodesic dome represents a different way for humanity to be, live, and tell our history. The geodesic dome is constructed by combining a repeating pattern of triangles, an ancient symbol that points towards enlightenment, connecting the material and the spiritual worlds. The panels are visible during the day with natural light. Light emanates from within and backlights the panels at night, causing the dome to glow.

Each panel began in the photographic medium. Images were created when I felt an innate pull toward something in the landscape; they carry a feeling/ memory held by the land and myself. The symbol also began in the photographic medium and evolved from mirroring and repeating the natural form to create a new object. In this case, an Iris was used. The Iris is the flower of the Goddess who rode rainbows to Earth; in ancient Egypt, the Iris symbolized the essence and renewal of life.

In the video, the song, playing softly in the background, is used with permission of the Pete Sisters, indigenous peoples of the Salish Kootenai lands; it is called “Be The Change.”

This work calls each of us to be the change we want to see in the world. I hope the dome invites conversation and meditation, a place to pause, marvel, and recognize the magic and miracles of this planet we call home. It is up to us to act together to protect and demand a sustainable future for upcoming generations. It is a call for courage and commitment, to work in new ways, to come together for the health of all peoples, fauna, flora, and the very land and water that sustains all life.
